I ventured to the neighboring prefecture of Gunma for a hands on workshop on LoRaWAN sponsored by the Prefecture at a new Maebashi City business incubator with presentations by LoRaWAN sensor, gateway and systems vendors and the City of Ota.
I am most grateful to Hidetoshi Yoshida for introducing me to this seminar. I met Mr. Yoshida through someone who attended the talk I gave in Tokyo last year about my own recent humble explorations of things LoRa. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Yoshida for sharing his extensive knowledge about the topic with me these past several months and in tracing me to so many intriguing project in Japan and elsewhere.
In this workshop, groups of 2-3 persons had an opportunity to enroll a simple temperature and humidity sensor in the Things Network and to confirm that the sensor was connected via a real-time dashboard.
Ota City also presented details about its collaboration with several professors at Gunma University to deploy over a dozen gateway towers and begin the process of deploying hundreds of sensor nodes throughout the city for several immediate applications including transportation, wild animal control, and education. They are also working on several other future applications such as elderly care and road maintenance.
